I believe the actual travel time is in excess of 24 hr. NOT counting delays. My friend just waited a few hours at the Thai border from Malaysia when we met in Hat Yai.
I would not recommend that trip. I would suggest the train from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, and then fly to Bangkok on Air Asia. There is a bus directly from the airport to Pattaya which takes 1 1/2 hr or less depending on traffic. That airport bus costs 150 baht. I just checked rates for Air Asia R/t to BKK from KUL and that is 4000 baht, have no idea about the train, but could guess about $30 USD.
Bell Travel operates the bus from BKK to Pattaya, 8am to 6pm from airport. phone 02747 4675 From outside Thailand dial 66 and drop the first zero. A taxi from BKK to Pattaya is about 1500 baht, but go OUTSIDE of the airport doors to the taxi stand. The hawkers in the airport charge more.
The trip will take 2 nights with change from Malayan Rail to Thai Rail. The journey ends at Bangkok and you have to take a bus to Pattaya which is famous due to its proximity to the capital.
Unless you are an avid train traveller, flying is cheaper.
