Pattaya: Thailand’s golf capital

In 1960 Pattaya was still a peaceful fishing village. Today South East Asia’s most famous and notorious seaside resort attracts a strange blend of tourists, consisting out of huge crowds of single men as well as entire families. The first type of traveller mainly visits Pattaya for pursuing their hedonistic desires. Nowadays there’s many other reasons to come to Pattaya and golf is one of the highlights. With nearly 20 courses within reach of Pattaya, no other place in Thailand offers such a big choice in a convenient area. The courses are brilliantly maintained, challenging and not too expensive.

During the last two decades golfing has become one of the most popular sports in Thailand. This sport’s fast increasing popularity was most likely also influenced due to the world’s best player, Tiger Woods, having a Thai mother. Recently Thailand organised several international golfing tournaments. Each year new courses are constructed. Destinations such as Chiang Mai, Phuket, Kanchanaburi, Hua Hin and Khao Yai offer well designed world-class golf courses too, but it is Pattaya that truly appeals to the golfer, since it’s so close to Bangkok and with its hospitality and nightlife creates a perfect boys weekend away.

Today Pattaya undoubtedly provides a haven for both the beginning and advanced golfers. You’ll also be pleasantly surprised by the cheap green fees, the golf equipment’s rental rates and several other necessary expenses. Enjoying a very reasonably priced golf day has become very popular among tourists. The person who will teach you the essential golfing skills is usually a professional player. In general the green fees will be between 400 and 1,000 baht on weekdays and between 600 and 1,700 baht on weekends. The hire rates for clubs vary from 400 to 600 baht and a pair of shoes and umbrella (highly recommendable during the afternoon) can be rented for 100 baht each.
In keeping with Pattaya’s spirit, even the caddies are pretty
In keeping with Pattaya’s spirit, even the caddies are pretty

Early in the morning is the most convenient time to arrive at the course of your choice as about three hours later it might become too crowded. The cooler weather conditions during the early morning hours along with the more laid-back atmosphere are benefits as well. If you still prefer to play around afternoon than you should keep in mind that the heat often reaches unbearable heights, which often seems to be the cause for other players to behave rather annoyingly.

You shouldn’t have any difficulties finding a travel agency in your country or in Thailand, which organises a selection of various golf trips. They also provide the option to experience plenty of world-class courses in two or three days, while Pattaya’s renowned Thai hospitality and vibrant nightlife may be enjoyed as well.

Most of the clubhouses at the golf courses are well-facilitated and often feature a bar, restaurant, golfing equipment shop and a service offering traditional Thai massages. At the majority of the courses it is possible to rent the necessary equipment. The International Pattaya Golf Club issues membership cards, which only cost 200 baht and are valid for two years. Many ex-pats and even tourists make use of this popular golfing. Once registered as a member you are allowed being a player in the club’s tournaments, which usually take place twice monthly on various course locations.

I recently had a most enjoyable golfing holiday in Pattaya and some of the courses I truly enjoyed playing included the Rayong Green Valley C.C., which is a scenic and superbly, by Thompson & Wolveridge, designed course. This golf course houses an outstanding clubhouse along with several accommodation options. Another of my personal favourites is Laem Chabang. This well situated 27 holes course enjoys the reputation being one of the finest in the country. Finally I would like to mention Siam C.C. Many golfers will tell you that this course offers Thailand’s most difficult challenge. The combination of narrow fairways, sand, water features and mature landscapes create an unforgettable golf course.

There are too many to mention here, but a list of golf courses in Pattaya can be found here, with full descriptions.

Sattahip and the history of GIs coming to Pattaya

By Jan Schauseil

Prior to the 1950s, Pattaya was little more than a quiet fishing village along the Gulf of Thailand. Its long sweeping bay was populated only by a few boats and beach shacks where the villagers lived. When residents of Bangkok and a handful of neighbouring soldiers began spending their weekends in Pattaya during the 1960s, this beach town began its transformation into a major seaside resort destination.

In the early days, only a few of the wealthier Thais came to Pattaya to enjoy the sea and sand, which at that time was still clean and uncluttered. They bought small beach cottages to use as weekend retreats and helped encourage the locals to open little seafood restaurants. But soon after their ‘discovery’ of Pattaya, the war in Vietnam brought an entirely different crowd to its quiet beaches.

It all started when a group of 500 American soldiers stationed at the military base in Korat were driven to Pattaya on 29th June 1959 for a week of rest and relaxation (R&R). They rented several houses at the southern end of the beach from a prominent Thai, Lord Sunthorn, thus opening Pandora’s Box for this sleepy fishing village. Despite their short stay, the GIs had a great time and raved about the place. The word spread among other American soldiers stationed in the region and Pattaya quickly became a hot alternative to the concrete sprawl of Bangkok.

Even before the start of the Vietnam War, American GIs had put Pattaya on the map as the best beach destination to unwind and indulge. But when large numbers of troops began to arrive at the neighbouring Ban Sattahip Air Base in 1968, things really picked up in Pattaya. Also known as U-Tapao International Airport, the army base at Sattahip was heavily staffed and used by the US Air Force throughout the Vietnam conflict.

Sattahip is also the site of Juksamet Port, the home of the Thai Royal Navy’s largest naval base and one of Thailand’s few deep-water ports. Between the air and naval bases, there were thousands of soldiers living in and passing through Sattahip. Since the military bases are just 90kms from Pattaya, GIs flocked to the beach resort in droves whenever they had an R&R break. The first hotel, called the Nautical Inn, opened in 1960 and is still in business today. In 1964 the first bar was opened in the Nova Lodge Hotel, which is also still open.

As the Vietnam War raged on during the late 1960s and early 1970s, hundreds of American GIs were airlifted into U-Tapao air base on a daily basis for their R&R. Nearly all of these soldiers headed straight to Pattaya, where a boom town of partying, prostitution and escapism developed. Coming right out of a war zone, one can only imagine the state of mind these soldiers were in when they arrived in Pattaya. Fighting an intense physical and psychological guerilla war in Vietnam created a genuine need for total escapism.

To fulfill these soldiers’ needs, an entire resort and entertainment industry emerged from the humble foundations of a fishing village. Thais from all over the country, but especially from Issan, moved to Pattaya to work in this booming and indulgent atmosphere. In the early days, a hotel room cost about 50 cents and a lady companion not much more. The GIs spent their earnings freely and the Thais happily raked them in.

At the southern end of the beach a ramshackle spot called the Marine Bar opened and soon became the hub of Pattaya’s growing red-light district. As fast as the American GIs were being shipped into Vietnam to fight, this hedonistic neighbourhood expanded. Soon Pattaya jokingly earned a reputation for I&I (intoxication and intercourse). Vast numbers of drinking holes, nightclubs and girlie bars opened to cater to the swarms of young GIs who arrived in a seemingly endless flow.

Despite its deserved reputation as an unbridled party nexus, Pattaya wasn’t only about sex, drinking and drugs. At its heart it was still a beach town and the sea and sand also played a big role in the soldiers’ R&R. The first scuba diving shop opened during this period, providing an underwater escape for many servicemen and their families. Some of the first commercial diving in Thailand was done right off the shores of Pattaya among its pretty coral reefs. The clean sandy beaches, clear waters and coral reefs provided plenty of outdoor recreation to balance the night-time activities. Visitors could rent ski boats, work on their tans and take long swims in the calm sea.

When the Vietnam War came to a close in 1975, the fortunes of Pattaya fell into a brief slump. With all the soldiers gone, many of the bars, clubs and workers were forced into early retirement. Rival beach destinations had begun to emerge along Thailand’s endless coasts, offering a distinctly different scene to that which Pattaya was famous for.
In just thirty years this coastal area was entirely developed into a city

Yet the town endured, boosted by a new wave of hedonistic visitors from around Asia, India and Russia. Pattaya was officially named a city in 1978 and began to market itself to a broader range of tourists. After the Vietnam War, many servicemen stayed in Pattaya. They married Thais, opened bars and restaurants, and kept the spirit of the American GIs alive.

Today, thousands of American soldiers still come to Pattaya every year to participate in a joint Thai-US military exercise known as Cobra Gold. Although the circumstances are different than they were in the 1970s, many of the GIs still head right to the heart of infamous Pattaya where things haven’t actually changed that much.

Pattaya Ramblings

Pattaya Ramblings

After a nice session of serious Falang/Thai sexual hi-jinx my lady for the day drags her gorgeous butt outa the bed. First time in hours she's been out of the bed since I haven't ordered food from room service for a long while and threw the damned remote control for the T.V. out off the balcony hours ago and ripped the T.V. plug outa the wall too and ripped the blankets off the bed before starting our latest fuck marathon! She jumps in the shower a few minutes after we collapse, sweat soaked and satiated on the bed.

I figure she's gonna ask for more money later as she is sore and I abused my twenty or so dollars worth of sexual favors by a long way. Fuck it. And her again hopefully.

She's been working for her keep, and bitching about my being ba ba bo bo (crazy) 'cause I threw the remote off the balcony. Sorry but MTV Thai drives me nuts and I ain't competing with it for attention for my poor, neglected pecker. Priorities darling, fucking priorities. I promised to throw the T.V. off the balcony next if she didn't shut it off and attend to her mia noi wifely duties.

There should not be televisions allowed in hotel rooms in Thailand I say. The rooms are for fucking and sleeping! Ya wanna watch T.V. you say? Go to a bar fer chrissakes. Or go back home to your country. I'm not here to watch T. fucking V.! You can do plenty of that at home in between trips to the Land of the Smiling Clams.

Sex, sex, sex and sleep. Priorities as I said.

I grab a towel and wrap it around my perspiring body and go out onto the balcony for a smoke. I close the sliding glass door behind me so as to keep in the cool air blasting from the ac I had just turned to maximum before coming outside. I'm hot, sweaty, tired, hungry, thirsty, and still horny. Usually takes at least two or three weeks or so to drain the juices completely before my priorities shift.

Lighting up a Winston I inhale deeply and rest my forearms on the railing of the balcony. A light breeze tickles the hairs on my arms and I inhale deeply the fragrant aroma of Pattaya that wafts up to the 10th floor.

I survey the view from the upper floor overlooking this crazy, sex filled, male's Disneyland. Colored lights fill my eyes as I gaze towards the ocean a few blocks away. The sounds of this sanook (fun) crazed city drift up and call me toward another night of drunken debauchery, filled with available conquests of an easy nature. What should I do with the lady in the water closet?

She has been fun, and full of piss and vinegar, and eager to please me the first couple of days. A randy, rowdy, sexy, fuck machine with a flashing smile. A nice little round ass, tits to die for and an attitude towards sex that makes Marilyn Chambers in Insatiable 2 seem tame in comparison. Now she seems tired and worn from my depravities and willing to go home to her small room and rest while counting the dollars she has earned for her time working beneath me. Fresh meat is needed, I think, for my insatiable lust. Time to move on.

The warm breeze dries my sweaty skin as I ponder my options while dragging in a lungful of nicotine laced smoke. Where to go? Who to see? Who to fuck? How much tip to give?

All serious questions, given serious thought on the balcony while she lathers and soaps her golden, silken skin in the hong nam. She told me that if I fucked her again tonight her pussy would die. A noble death I told her. She didn't understand the joke. Language is a problem here when used to express anything other than buying beer, food, pussy, or trinkets.

A deep, philosophical conversation can be had elsewhere though. Priorities! Thailand is for sex! It is hard to have a meaningful conversation with someone who is gobbling your cock 50% of the time and either eating, sleeping, or watching fucking T.V. while you're sleeping the rest of the time. And who knows maybe 25 words in your language, and you hers. Thank God I say! Falang women back home should gobble more and talk less and there would be much less problems between the sexes. If the ex gave more sex and talked less she wouldn't be an ex now would she?

Women don't seem to understand that sex, for men, IS conversation. Why do we have to talk about love darling? Spread your legs or open your mouth and suck my dick and I'll SHOW you how much I love you. If I'm fucking you and not some other woman than obviously I love you. For now anyway. Until you start talking too freaking much.

I notice she's out of the bathroom and flick my cigarette butt out over the parking lot and go back inside to take a shower myself.

After showering I come out and tell her I'm tired and want to sleep alone tonight and pay her her money and give a good tip to her. She smiles, wais me, and asks me to call her tomorrow when I wake up. Yeah, sure darling. I really don't want to make her poor pussy die! There's nothing worse than a dead pussy!

"Leave me your mobile number." I tell her.

She scribbles her number and gives me a kiss and a hug while giving me the slip of paper. I musta tipped good 'cause she ain't complaining at all. I walk her to the elevator in my robe and kiss her goodbye again. She was sweet and so damn sexy. Lah gone, puying suay! (Goodbye, beautiful lady!)

I go back in my room and get dressed for the night. She worked on Soi 2. Tonight looked like a Soi 8 kinda night. Or Pattaya Walking Street maybe. Duck food ain't my style! I wait 15 minutes, drink a beer and head out to grab a baht bus for places an' faces unknown and unexplored. Disneyland has soooo many rides.

Which one should I try next?

Pattaya Beach Beauty

Pattaya Beach is extremely popular with travelers, not merely with Thai tourists, but also among persons from various parts of the world. Pattaya has obtained its status from the gorgeousness of its beaches and the diversity of beach activities, which are on suggestion. Though, there are dissimilarities concerning the style of tour of foreign tourists from various areas. Firstly, we need to comprehend the characteristics and nature of the tourists. The dissimilarities in the behavior of travelers sometimes count on the district, which they come from. For instance, tourists from the United States of America and Europe are probable to like better a relaxing journey rather than a visiting the attractions or participating in many types of activities. Also, traveler behavior seems to depend on the area’s climate they come from, with travelers who come from districts, which have long winters used to unwind in countries, which are located in a tropical zone such as Thailand, Indonesia (Bali), and some other countries. In the meantime, travelers from the Asia seem to delight activities other than sunbathing and spending the beach. The amount of travelers from western countries visiting Pattaya is about one million for a year, and in reply to the resorts and hotels in Pattaya need to provide premium service and options to tempt Western customers.

For example, in English speaking Western countries it is usually considered good manner to bring a bottle of wine when coming to someone's house for dinner. In France, however this is considered insulting as it suggests the hosts are unable to provide their own good wine.
In Arab countries it's rude to display the soles of your feet or touching somebody with your shoes, Also eating with left hand is extremely offensive; for the left hand is reserved for bodily hygiene.

In the United States, it is rude not leaving a proper tip for a server at a restaurant. While in other countries some establishment may add a gratuity to the bill, in the United States this is not usually done and is up to the patron to leave an adequate tip, usually 15 percent.

The Past

Pattaya's name was originated from the march of Phraya Tak (later known as King Taksin the Great) and his followers from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi just before the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom to the Burmese invaders in 1767.

When Phraya Tak's army arrived in the vicinity of what is Pattaya today, he encountered the troops of Nai Klom who tried to intercept him. When the two leaders met face to face, Nai Klom was awed by Phraya Tak's dignified manner and his army's strict discipline, thereby surrendering without a fight. The place where the two armies confronted each other was later called Thap Phraya, which means the Army of the Phraya. This was later changed to Phatthaya, which happens to mean the wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast at the beginning of the rainy season. Today the spelling of the name has been simplified to Pattaya.

For centuries, Pattaya was a small fishing village almost cut off from the outside world. But a big change occurred on 29 April 1961 when the first group of about 100 American servicemen who would join the Vietnam War arrived in Pattaya for relaxation. Soon, sleepy Pattaya became Thailand's premier and most successful beach resort, which annually attracts hundreds of thousands of pleasure-seeking visitors. A full range of accommodations from super deluxe hotels to bungalows and mini-pocket guesthouses replaced fishermens huts along the beach. Fishing vessels were adapted to become tourist boats and swimmers and sunbathers from various parts of the world frequented the quiet powdery golden beaches. Places of nighttime entertainment have also sprung up and are popular among international tourists.

The Present

Pattaya currently integrates the delights of a 1st class beach resort, city-like dining, shopping and night entertainment facilities with more than 300 assorted hotels, thousands of shops, restaurants and bars. In addition, there are an array of sports and recreational activities including beaches, golf courses, tennis courts, go-kart, gyms for working out, weight lifting and Thai-boxing gear. Pattaya offers a broad range of things to do. During the day, one may enjoy riding elephants or driving humble automatic mini-bikes, monstrous motorcycles, or even monster multicolored convertible Jeeps. Others go for shooting firearms, scuba diving and surfing, deep-sea fishing, speed boats, scooters, water-skiing, parasailing, or aerial sports such as gliding ultra-lights and flying motor-propelled gliders. On the other hand, at night, there are restaurants, bars, theaters, cabaret shows, night clubs, bowling halls, billiard & snooker clubs, discos, sauna & massage parlors, not to cite its absolutely incredible shopping which is available non-stop both day-and-night.

Pattaya Beach is a favorite spot of many tourists, and it is also the most popular beach that Pattaya Thailand has to offer. Since it is located near shopping centers, bars, and hotels, it has become very popular among tourists. Unfortunately, it is often hard for many to get a spot on the sand, due to its popularity. Jomtien Beach is another one of the beaches which Pattaya Thailand has to offer. While it does offer some hotels and restaurants, Jomtien is mainly an area where people own summer homes. It is typically easier to find a spot on the sand at this beach than at Pattaya Beach. Jomtien Beach is especially loved by who enjoy taking part in water sports. It has a large entertainment center which offers water park attractions, a roller coaster, a monorail and fun attractions for children - which has helped with it become a popular area for people who are vacationing as families to want to visit. Of course, the beautiful beaches that Pattaya Thailand has to offer is not the only thing that this city has going for it.

There are many other attractions which Pattaya has to offer that tourists all find to be quite appealing. Some of these attractions include golf courses, places for go-cart racing, the Sri Racha Tiger Zoo, Pattaya Beach Resort Water Park and Funny Land Amusement Park, a submarine, a crocodile farm, and various museums. There are also various shopping centers and stores which anyone may be interested in visiting while they are in Pattaya. Go go bars and strip clubs occupy the time of many tourists.

As you can see, there are so many different tourist attractions that Pattaya Thailand has to offer. Ranging from its beautiful beaches where you can spend the day relaxing, having fun in the sun, or taking part in water sports to its amusement parks and other entertaining activities that the city of Pattaya has to offer, there is no doubt that Pattaya has gained some much well deserved appeal from tourists. No matter what you are interested in doing while you are visiting Thailand, Pattaya has just about everything that you could possibly be interested in to offer. Pattaya travel guide - top 10 recommendations

With its large expatriate community and diverse attractions, Pattaya has gained a reputation as one of Thailand's leading international communities. Its other reputation as Bangkok's playground and the capital of the sex industry, it attracts a very specific sort of tourist. No matter what your reasons for visiting, you'll find an exhausting list of attractions, theme parks and entertainment to keep you busy while you're here. In Pattaya gay travellers are also welcome and made to feel comfortable. Thailand is very tolerant of gay activities, Pattaya is no exception.
Million Years Stone Park and Pattaya Crocodile Farm The Million Years Stone Park and Crocodile Farm is a great place to take in some of the indigenous plant and animal life of Thailand. More than 1,000 crocodiles are kept and bred on the grounds and there are some elephants and rare albino bears. Elephant shows are held every day, as is the crocodile roundup. The grounds also have some beautiful landscaping, most outstanding of which is the bonsai garden. The park can be reached via a 15-minute drive from Pattaya city centre.

Ripley's Believe It or Not This one-of-a-kind museum is located on the third floor of the Royal Garden Plaza building in Pattaya. The facility contains over 300 unusual exhibits exploring the whole gamut of weird and unexplained phenomena. Some of the more popular attractions include the Infinity Maze, an immersive, walk-through sound and light show that tests the limits of perception; and the Haunted Adventure, a resurrection of an old real-life mystery set at the Grimsby and Streaper Casket Company and brought to life with live actors, special effects and animatronics. Despite its emphasis on the odd, Ripley's is Pattaya's most outstanding museum and a definite must-see.

Sriracha Tiger Zoo North of the city of Pattaya, the Sriracha Tiger Zoo can be found off Route 3241 via a 30-minute drive from the city centre. The subjects of this facility can be found in a variety of circumstances including in their natural surroundings as well as more interactive settings. Visitors will have the opportunity to bottle-feed young cubs as well as have their picture taken with them. The zoo is home to several other species including crocodiles, elephants and scorpions. Some of the more outlandish shows include elephants playing basketball and a woman wrestling a crocodile.

Mini Siam One of Pattaya's most well-known sites for tourists is Mini Siam, a 1:25 scale replication of some of Thailand's most popular sites from across the country. There are 80 buildings in the park representing periods throughout Thailand's history. Don Muang Airport is on-site, as is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok and the Temple of Phimai in Nakorn Ratchisima. The best time to visit is after dark, when the exhibits are illuminated and take on a new life.

Nong Nooch Tropical Garden Anyone who wishes to visit the Nong Nooch Tropical Garden can catch a shuttle bus that departs from in front of the Nipa Lodge Hotel in downtown Pattaya. This park covers more than 600 acres and hosts a broad spectrum of exhibits dedicated to Thai culture and history. The grounds include a cactus garden, an orchid nursery and a lake with canoes that can be hired. The arts and culture centre hosts daily exhibitions of Thai dance, Muay Thai (Thai boxing) and elephant shows. There's also a zoo on-site and accommodation for overnight stays. Wat Yansangwararam Pattaya is not as well known for its temples and ancient architecture as Bangkok or Chiang Mai. Even so, the Yansangwararam is a temple worth checking out while in the area. It's located a few miles south of Pattaya and was built in 1988 to commemorate the 42nd year of King Bhumibol's reign. On-site is a lake with Chinese pavilions and a building that houses several art exhibits and antiques of Chinese origin. The temple itself sits at the apex of a flight of 299 stairs hemmed in by snakes.

Pattaya Elephant Village Visitors who want to get an up close look at the iconic Thai elephant can do so at the Pattaya Elephant Village. These animals have served the country in a variety of roles over the centuries, spanning war times and more recently, teak harvesting. The elephants in the village are protected and perform daily educational and entertaining feats showcasing their forestry and football skills. Visitors can also ride the elephants into the forest and listen to English language explanations of this beast's history in Thailand.

Pattaya Beach While it may be saturated with visitors and a little polluted, Pattaya's beachfront property continues to be its greatest draw. Visitors come to enjoy the beach in any number of ways, whether it's a walk on the tree-lined promenade; a relaxed seafood dish eaten on an outdoor veranda or simply a laid-back afternoon spent on a deckchair. Charter boats head out to some of the nearby islands where further exploration and snorkelling is available. There's not too much actual swimming in the water, though it's bustling with jet-skis, banana boats and motor boats.

Amusement parks The constant flux of tourists through Pattaya has given way to a variety of amusement parks. Pattaya Water Park is a huge facility with water slides, Jacuzzis, whirlpools and a children's wading pool. Staggering towers at the Pattaya Park Resort and Amusement Park are capped by revolving restaurants with impressive views of the city and sea. The Funny Land Amusement Park has all sorts of carnival and theme-park style rides including a roller coaster and a pendulum Viking ship. Asia's largest aquarium is also located in Pattaya--Underwater World, with an impressive walking tunnel allowing visitors to walk in among the aquatic life.

Nightlife and gay activities Anyone visiting Pattaya will at some point be confronted with the city's notoriety as a part of the sex industry. While it's true that sex tourism is in full force in the go-go bars along Walking street, it's easy to find more family-oriented locations across town where you can get a bite to eat or relax in the evening. There are a couple of Irish pubs, an English pub and a blues bar where tourists can enjoy a relaxed evening without the risqué atmosphere. On the whole, the nightlife in Pattaya spans all interests and there's something for everyone to enjoy. Pattaya is also a popular gay destination. Gay Pattaya is centred on Boyztown and is very welcoming. Gay travellers feel very comfortable in Pattaya and have plenty of options for fun.

Day Trip To Koh Larn

Was talking to a girl in a bar and the conversation came around to what other places in Thailand had I visited other than Pattaya. I rattled off a short list - Bangkok, Phitsanulok, Nakhon Si Thammaratt, Phuket, Koh Samui, Had Yai, Korat, and a few others. She asked me if I had ever been to Koh Larn. I told her "No" and she told me she had never been either.
Well that did it. I immediately invited her to go the next day. She was beside herself and, at first, did not believe me. I promised her that I was telling her the truth. She came home with me and spent the night and the next morning we grabbed some breakfast and booked our day trip.

We only had to wait about 15 minutes and were escorted to a meeting place near Beach Road. It was within walking distance and we were there in about as long as it takes to smoke a cigarette. A few more folks joined us and about 10 minutes later, we were heading for the beach to meet our boat.

We were taken down to the water and a long boat was waiting for us. It was very narrow - just enough room to sit 2 across. There were about 15 of us in the boat and it could have held twice as many.

We chugged out to a square pier about 15 minutes from shore. This was the para-sailing station was. I wanted no part of this and neither did the young lady with me. We just sat and watched the others on their 30-second trip that cost about 10 dollars.

From there we embarked on a two-story boat. This one had a covered area and a place to sit topside along with some room in the back of the boat. About 30 of us were on this leg of the trip. The ship chugged along at a nice, slow pace and after about 45 minutes we were nearing Koh Larn.

Another small boat came out to meet us and this one had a covered, glass bottom. After we got closer to the island, we removed the wooden covers on the glass and made an attempt to see the coral bottom. But, the water was a bit murky and we could barely make out the bottom of the water. So, we headed for shore.

Since this little trip was impromptu, my girl didn't have any proper beach attire - so I got her a bathing suit, shower cap and a pair of flip-flops - all for about 10 dollars. We found a nice spot on the beach and picked out a couple of beach chairs (50 cents for the whole day's use) and staked out our turf. There were a few vendors but they didn't pester us much.

We were offered some of the paid activities - walking underwater, snorkeling, banana boat riding and a few others - not expensive - but really had nothing that I wanted other than to lounge on the beach. So, we just played in the water a bit and relaxed on the beach chairs for about an hour.

Then it was time for lunch. We were served soup, fried rice, fish and a few other Thai dishes and for some strange reason - french fries. The food was bland but edible. There was an Indian family in our group and they had a special meal because of their religion that looked a lot better than ours.

After lunch we walked around a bit, checked out the souvenir shops and went back to our beach chairs. Lounged a bit, played in the water and then it was time for a quick shower and back on the glass bottom boat for the return to Pattaya beach.

The glass bottom boat took us back out the bigger boat and we headed back to Pattaya. The girl I was with took out her cell phone and surprised me by dialing in some music on her FM radio. She had earphones and we each used one and listened to some soft rock while making our way back to the beach at Pattaya.

We slowly made our way back with a nice breeze and spectacular view. A few hundred yards from shore we were once again met by the long, skinny boat and made our way to shore.

All in all, a very pleasant day and the total cost for the two of us was 20 dollars. Amazing Thailand.

Bangkok Or Pattaya - Decisions, Decisions

Bangkok or Pattaya - Decisions, Decisions
I visit a lot of Thailand Forums and very often a newbies will ask if he should go to Bangkok or Pattaya or both. He will also want to know how long he should stay at each place - if he goes to both.

As a season traveler to Thailand for over 30 years, I tend to be a bit cynical and advise most to just go straight to Pattaya. But, there are arguments to be made to stop by and visit Bangkok for a few days too.

I have toned down my advice a bit usually tell the newbie to visit Bangkok for 2 to 3 days at the beginning of his trip and then spend the rest of the 2 or 3 weeks in Pattaya. Everyone should see Bangkok at least once.

There is a lot to see in Bangkok if you can ever get to where you want to go. Traffic is usually moving along at a snail's pace and the meter in the taxi keeps ticking away. Walking around is hot and the streets are lined with vendors that block the sidewalk and will try any tactic to get you to stop and buy something from their stall. And, if you are walking around at night, you will have to watch out for the lady-boys and the muggers (as you would in almost any large city).

Once you suffer taxis and heat, there are numerous clubs, bars, and restaurants that would rival the best anywhere in the world. With prices being extremely low (despite the strengthening of the Baht), you can have a great night out on the town for a minimal amount of money.

Throw in inexpensive hotels, excellent shopping, and the friendliest people in the world, and you will have an experience unlike any you have ever had. Then, on your second visit to Thailand, you can just go straight to Pattaya.

Planning A Party In Pattaya?

Many folks go to Pattaya, Thailand and celebrate some occasion while they are there. Whether it be an anniversary, birthday, divorce, or nothing in particular, there are plenty of party venues to schedule your special event.
I have been going to Thailand for over 30 years, have made numerous friends there - both Thai and Expat and highly recommend the following venues:

1. The FLB bar - owned by Martin and managed by Ricky down on Walking Street past the big tree - this is a very friendly hostess bar that will cater to your every whim. For about 12,000 Baht, about 300 dollars, you will have the time of your life. Excellent food from the Sportsman bar, great, live entertainment from the Ugly Brothers band and some of the friendliest ladies in Pattaya. Martin also runs an excellent forum at pattayatalk.com.

2. Cherry Bar - on Soi 8 and owned by a very friendly Brit - Adam. Adam has devoted his life to making this bar successful on a street lined wall-to-wall with similar bars. He does an excellent job of promoting his quaint little bar and bends over backwards to make you feel at home. And, you don't even have to be a Brit to have a great time here.

3. Lennies Bar - on Soi Diamond between Walking Street and 2nd Road - Paul, the manager, will ease all of your worries and make you feel at home as soon as you walk in the door. As Eric Clapton said, this place will "ease you worried mind". Parties can be arranged easily - just see Paul.

4. Tequila Queen #2 - just off of Walking Street and partially owned by Bob of Bob's BBQ - small, air-conditioned go-go bar that guarantees great food and a super time. It may be small, but the fun will be huge.

5. Secrets Bar - Last but not least by any means. Ben used to be the manager at FLB but has moved onward and upwards and has set up his own bar, restaurant and hotel - the Secrets Hotel and Bar. On Soi 14 - just off of Walking Street Ben will ensure that you will have a super time. Ben is the host with the most and I have known him for over 7 years - he will take care of all your needs. Ben also runs a great forum at pattayasecrets.com. The restaurant at Secrets - food you would not believe, caters parties here.

So, if you are heading out to Pattaya, plan a party. It can be for any occasion or just for the heck of it.

Pattaya Beach [Thailand] Dawn Freak Show - Pattaya Beach at sunrise is a great place for 'people watching'

I call it the Pattaya Beach 'Dawn Freak Show!'

If you've even been to Thailand, specifically Pattaya Beach, you will already know there's an unlimited variety of sights and sounds to experience there. If you enjoy just relaxing and doing some serious 'people watching', then without a doubt, this is the place for you! Let me tell you now, if you can imagine it, you can find it here.

Once I was on a submarine cable laying job in Thailand. Our company was laying a sub sea [that's underwater.. for you folks that really need the basics] fiber optics cable that was to link up most of the Southeast Asian countries with the USA and Europe. Well, it was a hell of a job cause they had me put up in a fairly nice hotel right there on the main strip in Pattaya Beach. Hell of a job and hell of an assignment. LOL. Heck.. my employer didn't know it at the time but even if they would have cut my pay to HALF of what my current day rate was - I wouldn't have left that job for anything.

If any of you readers out there that have had the pleasure to visit Pattaya beach you will fully understand where I'm coming from here. For those of you who have never been to Pattaya beach.. well.. all I can say is there's no shortage of beautiful almond eyed ladies and bars there! I don't even think it's possible to count all the bars there.. every type imaginable that also comes with every type of lady imaginable also.

It's just to hard for me to explain what exactly what Pattaya beach is all about but one thing is for sure - a single male can have a hell-of-a-good time there! There's no denying that at all. If you're an able bodied male.. and you can't get a girl at Pattaya beach.. god have mercy on your soul. That's about all I can say for your sorry ass. LOL

Back to my main topic now.. so.. on this sub sea cable laying job, sometimes I had to catch a boat out to the barge [which was anchored about a few miles offshore there in Pattaya bay]. On those mornings I would have to go down to the little bar on the main strip and wait for the boat to come fetch me. This bar is called the Marine Bar and it's located right on the main strip. Yup.. the Marine Bar was named after the good-ole US Marines! cause during the Vietnam war era days they used to all go to Pattaya beach for some good ole R&R [Rest & Recreation].

I would arrive at the Marine Bar about 5:30 am and wait for my pick-up boat while watching the sun rise. I've always had a favorite pass time of people watching.. and let me tell you.. I had no ideal that people watching at sunrise on Pattaya Beach could bring an entire new meaning to the word! This brought me to an entirely different level! Incredible… I noticed several different types of people there and I classified them into several different crazy groups. Such as…

The All-Nighter's (aka: Vampire Guys)

These guys are very easy to spot cause they usually are the most loud and noticeable of the groups. These guys are the one's who have been up partying all night long and are still going strong at it… maybe it's because of the drugs they took earlier that night.. who knows how they can do it. Oh.. they're good at partying and they do it every night to the maximum. They sleep only around 10 or 11am and then wake up again around 6 or 7pm to do it all over again!

Most of these guys are here in Pattaya on a short vacation and they're here for one reason and one reason only - to PARTY.. and I mean, PARTY HARD! They've been working all year for this short 2 week vacation and they fully intend on packing in at least a years worth of missed partying during their stay here. They only go back to their hotel and pass out when their body is begging for mercy and to get their batteries recharged for a few hours. As soon as they wake up, it's, "What the f**k are we doing sleeping.. LET'S GO PARTY AGAIN!!"

Falang [Foreigner] Drunkards

These are the falang or farang.. [that's 'foreigner' in Thai language] guys who had obviously been out drinking [to much!] and partying all night and didn't even yet realize it's already the next day approaching. They are already so drunk but still insisting to the bar waitress to, 'give me another round'. By now they are so totally wasted and clueless that nothing really mattered to them anymore. The nothing that really mattered anymore includes [but is not limited to] the following; a) The Very Sexy Girl that they had earlier bar fined who was already so tired and pissed-off with this drunkard that all she wanted to do now was to go back to her bar and sleep. Sitting there watching.. I felt sorry for these girls.. what a waste! b) The bar waitress was even fed-up with these kinds of guys already. The next drink she wanted to give this drunkard should have a mickey in it so the guy would just pass out on the bar and be done with it. She'd be doing him a favor.. believe me. c) They're so wasted that they're about to pass-out on the bar.. at which time any Thai thief or rejected Katoey will be able to casually walk over and empty their wallets and pockets for them [well.. at least then they wouldn't have anymore money to pay for anymore drinks so this would force them to go back to their hotel to either sleep it off or.. get more money and come back!].

Last Call For Alcohol Girls

These are the girls that nobody wanted… not even the drunkard above. These girls were totally ignored by so very many horny foreigners and they haven't a clue why. Perhaps the fact that they're ugly as sin may have had something to do with their rejection. I don't know.. just thinking out loud. But hey, even ugly girls have feelings and they deserve to be loved also. Anybody ever heard the saying, "I've never gone to bed with an ugly woman.. but I've woken up with a few!?" LOL

Ok, so.. these not so pretty girls.. they're still hopeful so still staying out there on the streets.. hoping and praying that some drunk or sucker or reject guy will grab them and bring them back to their hotel rooms and make wild passionate love to them.

Pissed-Off & Rejected Katoeys

Now here's a group you won't find anyplace else in the world! Only in Thailand do they have the most beautiful [and sometimes.. not so beautiful] Katoeys! For those of you who don't know what a Katoey is, let me enlighten you. A Katoey is a Ladyboy, HeShe, SheMale, Tranvestite.. you get my drift now.

Believe it or not.. they're in big demand in Thailand. Many foreigners [usually those old, bald, fat foreigner guys] love to play in the sack with Katoeys! That's a known fact [so please don't take offense if you're reading this and you happen to fit the Katoey liking description] LOL. Nothing personal guys. Hey, just to be fair.. I'm sure there's also some young, not-bald, slim foreigner guys who also like to roll in the sack with Katoeys [there.. you happy now?].

Now.. Katoey's have feelings too.. and if you're a totally rejected Katoey you're probably a bit pissed-off come morning time. By this time of morning you can see rejection written all over their faces.. and they're none to happy about it either so they're still out looking.. praying.. hoping.. that they may still have a chance to find a horny little fat and bald foreigner guy to take them back to their hotel room and give them a good … um…. rear-end screwing… with some payment afterwards.. Of Course! How else are they going to make a living?? LOL

So, folks, there you have it. Now you know exactly what the Pattaya Beach Dawn Freak Show is all about so if you ever get a chance to visit the place perhaps you can even join the show if you're still up partying at sunrise there. LOL

Enjoy!

Pattaya Thailand - Real Estate boom?

Pattaya in Thailand, whilst is a favoured tourist atrraction to many a Thai soulmate seeking Westerner, it is also becoming a booming real estate network.
If you ask any real estate agent here in Pattaya if this is just the current fad, and if that property bubble is about to burst, they will more than likely laugh in your face and say "This is just the beginning!".

Pattaya Beach and Jomtien Beach are still currently the resorts that many people fly to each and every year and who can blame them - stunning food and restaurants, beautiful Thai women at every turn and hospitality like no other place in the world.

However, if you travel out and about those resorts, you will see building work at every turn as oppose to those beautiful Thai women I mentioned earlier. So something is certainly getting people excited!

There are shophouses, full blown communities and villas being built and with the land still available here in Pattaya, it shows no signs of slowing down.

So what is it about Pattaya that is creating this almost 'goldrush' of housing projects? Well that could be a number of things. There has been a lot of talk and meetings with hotels of proposed Casinos being built in the area and that project looks certain to go ahead at some stage, who knows when is anybody's guess. Rumours of Theme Parks have been mentioned also but these reasons are still to happen and let's face it, there may be a possibility that none of that happens.

My view is, which ever way you look at it, Pattaya will continue to be a popular tourist and expat attraction for many years to come and wave upon wave of tropical sun seeking foreigners (or farangs if you're Thai) will discover this country and learn to love this culture. Holiday homes, retirement homes and playboy homes will be sought after and there will be the supply for the demand.

If you're thinking of buying or owning any sort of property in Thailand, be sure that you understand the laws and regulations as I'm sure they will be very different to that of your own country.

The Gay Guide to Pattaya by Night

Notorious for its thriving sex industry, Pattaya has long attracted those in search of a good time. We’ve all seen the t-shirts claiming ‘good guys go to heaven and bad guys go to Pattaya’, but what is it that attracts so many members of the gay community to this commercialised beach resort? The answer is, of course, Pattaya’s naughty nightlife.

Pattaya has cashed in on the gay scene in recent years with numerous bars catering to a gay clientele, not to mention the enormously popular cabaret shows performed by kathoey, transwomen who are also commonly referred to as ladyboys. These unique performances add a touch of Moulin Rouge to the otherwise largely unglamorous resort and make for a memorable spectacle for the many gay men who come here specifically for the ladyboys.

First-time gay and lesbian visitors are often overwhelmed by Pattaya nightlife and its large area devoted solely to gay entertainment - Pattayaland soi 3. Lined with male go-go bars and nightclubs packing in a largely western crowd, the neon-lit district attracts equal numbers of curious tourists and punters looking to pay for sexual services.

Each bar has a number of staff at the entrance whose job it is to attract customers. In addition, the streets are lined with ‘freelancers’ whose presence multiplies by the end of the evening. Men and women walking around Pattayaland at night, also known as Boyz Town, should be ready to encounter friendly yet persistent representatives of the gay venues.

As with girlie bars in Thailand, inside Pattaya gay bars foreigners are made to feel welcome by staff that readily spark up friendly conversation with customers. The male-oriented gay bars are run by mainly young Thai guys whose feminine and petite nature often appeal to western tastes. Customers at these bars are under no obligation to do anything more than have a drink, but if they do like the look of one of the boys working, it is easy enough to agree on a price for any additional services.

Popular favourite Pattaya gay bars on Pattayaland soi 3 are Boyz Boyz Boyz, attracting both foreigners and locals with its dance floor and nightly shows, and the Throb/Splash nightclub opposite Le Café Royal, a popular ‘gay’ hotel. For happy hour, head for Panorama, a large and lively gay bar in the heart of the Boyz Town district.

“I’m amazed at how relaxed the atmosphere is in many of Pattayland’s gay bars”, says Hank, a first-time gay visitor from the Netherlands. “Of course, you have your regular pick-up joints, but many of the bars here offer more than just friendly guys”, he adds.

Not all gay visitors to Pattaya come here from the sex industry mind you, with many enjoying the cabaret shows and go-go bar performances along with their partners. The popular cabaret shows in Pattaya such as Alcazar and Tiffany’s are a hit with all types of visitors and are highly rated for their ornately costumed and often bear-breasted kathoey dancers.

The lesbian scene is more discreet, with a lack of venues devoted to women looking for women. Nevertheless, most of the bars welcome lesbians and there are many prostitutes who are happy to service women. Just like men, lesbian women can enjoy the go-go bars though they should expect to be in the minority. Thai tom girls, or dee, mostly take on a male appearance and can also be found in many of the regular, heterosexual bars and clubs around town.

Megan, a 30-year-old lesbian from Brisbane says the lesbian scene in Pattaya is healthy enough. “Anyone can walk into any bar and watch one of the shows or enjoy the company of the pretty Thai girls”, she says. “Many of the girls at the bars prefer the company of a farang female”, she adds.

There is however inevitably a seedy side to Pattaya’s gay and lesbian scene, with many gay tourists rejecting the entertainment on offer here. Even worse, a fare share of tourists end up getting ripped off while enjoying the bar scene. The Pattaya authorities have tried to clean up and contain the entertainment areas in recent years with some success, but as with all sex industry hubs, Pattayaland has its downsides.

Despite its controversial nature, the raunchy nightlife scene on offer in Pattaya remains a melting pot for gay and lesbian visitors, and a good income earner for the many gay and straight Thais who work the scene.

Are You Looking for a Luxurious Beach Hotel & Resort in Pattaya?

Pattaya is well known for its nightlife and beaches and is located about 150 km southeast from Bangkok. By car you would have to spend about 1.5 hours as the motorways are very developed. Starting as a fishing village, Pattaya has grown tremendously the last 40 years. The hotel industry has flourished with lightening speed due to ever increasing number of tourists visiting Pattaya (about 5 million per year). Hence, it’s the most popular and profitable business of this region. For this purpose only, the right hotel with lots of offerings at low rates is very easy to find. Pattaya has a lot to offer for anyone such as theme and amusement parks, golfing, ease of access to beaches, scuba diving, sailing, para-sailing, bungee jumping, go-karts, and a very vibrant nightlife. Pattaya also has a wide variety of international cuisine as well as great sea food at the restaurants along the beach. You can also find some great bargains on clothing in Pattaya. Although not as extensive as Bangkok, it still has some great shopping venues.

The general factor for choosing a right resort at Pattaya would usually be the starting price. You can visit each hotel's official site to see and check their offerings. You can also browse directories and travel sites by price, by class or even by top 10 lists. This can ease your work of finding the right accommodation partner when you visit Pattaya; little bit of searching can get you more than what you invest for the stay.

However, there are few points to be noted before choosing a hotel for your stay. Price should not be the only factor in choosing the right hotel. Other factors like location, services do matter in choosing the right hotel. If you want a cheap hotel yet want to see

the beach from the room, then it’s not difficult job to find one as there are lots of accommodations which offer cheap accommodations.

But, if you plan to stay in a luxurious hotel then you need to decide about the location, as you may be expecting high quality service for the money you spend.

If you have a fair budget and want all the luxuries of a hotel but also want to see the beach from the room of your hotel, then you might consider Siam Bayshore Resort & Spa located between “Walking Street” and Bali Hai pier. This hotel consists of 12-beautifully designed low-rise pavilions are set in acres of manicured tropical gardens and quiet lagoons. You can definitely feel a sense of privacy from your hotel room. Each room has a balcony overlooking the gardens, pool or ocean. This resort also offers six tennis courts for the avid tennis player, fitness room, 20 acres of lush gardens, swimming pool, children’s pool, Jacuzzi, spa services such as Thai massage, full aromatherapy treatment and massage, facials and foot massage, full conference and high speed internet connection. As the life in Pattaya can get a little hectic at times, many people prefer to stay in a serene and private resort located by the beach. Daily tours and arrangements to enjoy beach activities are available and highly recommended if you plan your holiday in Pattaya.

About Jomtien, Pattaya

Long before Pattaya became a famous destination – Jomtien Beach had already carved a niche of its own, at least among the local beachgoers who adored it for its pearly white sands and long straight beach.

Albeit a little late, there’s a renewed tourist interest in Jomtien from around the World. On an ordinary day, the resort looks like a busy carnival ground with colorful umbrellas dotting the whole stretch of the beach and sun worshippers in all kinds of swimwear-spicing up the scene. An interesting foreground to the huge palms, flood lit at night overhead with the Gulfs gentle breezes whispering in your ears.

Jomtien today

Jomtien today

Jomtien was an old fishing village, a great favorite picnic destination among the Bangkok residents evidence of which can be seen on any Thai public holiday!

Not so much of a water sport center then, this distinction came much later.

Today, Jomtien is a much more popular destination, the six-kilometers of largely straight beach, located just around the headland from Pattaya is popular with many water sports enthusiasts. It is also quieter and more relaxing than Pattaya Beach, shop’s, restaurants and the occasional bar are available along the road that runs parallel with the beach.

Thailand activities

Thailand activities - Pattaya surfing

Windsurfing is the beach’s most popular water sport particularly October through to June with ideal water and wind conditions.
Other sports such as skydiving, kite boarding, parasailing, water-skiing, jet skies and banana boat rides are also available.

There is little in the way of shopping or beer bars compared to Pattaya at Jomtien, which is essentially a residential area, with beachside hotels, condominiums and private rental Villas and Bungalows.

Jomtien is also the home to Pattaya Park, an entertainment complex with a water park, roller coaster, monorail and children’s activities. The 56-story Pattaya Park tower is a landmark that can be seen from virtually anywhere in the city.
